Carbon Fibre KAFO
In order to function in a satisfactory manner the lower limb has to possess stability for weight bearing and mobility for locomtion. KAFOs are used to provide stability for a weakened, unstable or a paralysed limb.
Today the clinician has so many different styles and different materials to choose from, but one thing has remained the same, they will need to determine what knee joints to use.
At T&S Orthotics we manufacture traditional KAFOs, Cosmetic KAFOs and Stance Control Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses (SCKAFO) using a varierty of materials; the traditional style is manufactured using metal and leather, the cosmetic KAFO can be manufactured from thermoplastic or carbon fibre, these can be either laminated or Pre-Preg.

There are various options of knee and ankle joints that can be used depending on the clients condition that needs to be treated. Most KAFOs that are built today would use either a ring-lock or a bale-lock locking knee joints; offset free is also used to control hyperextension of the knee.
RGO
An HKAFO is an extension of a KAFO, with the added hip joints and pelvic band this orthosis adds more stability for the patient. This orthosis is used on patients that require more stability of the hip and lower trunk due to paralysis and weakness. HKAFOs are mainly used for patients with paraplegial, spina bifida or myopathies.

Stance Control Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses
Advancement in Orthotic technology has led to the development of Stance Control knee joints. These orthoses are designed to allow free flexion of the knee during swing phase, while providing full stability in stance phase by automatically locking on initiation of the stance phase of gait.
Justin Lehmann, MD, published paper on the Biomechanics of Ankle-Foot Orthoses: Prescription and Design; outlined are three basic considerations for prescribing an Ankle Foot Orthoses. His first consideration suggested, "One must recognise that these orthoses are worn by many patients who can walk without them, but who cannot walk safely." Those are good words not only for the application of an Ankle Foot Orthoses, but also when selecting your first patient for a Stance control knee ankle foot orthoses (SCKAFO).
